Handcrafted Kitsune (fox mask with movable jaw)
This is a Kitsune fox mask. It is my own sculpt that I made for myself. It has an articulated jaw that would bounce up and down when worn during festivals. This mask was inspired and based the design of historical references picture that I found of original pieces with movable jaws that I found on the internet. This one was done in a simple stained wood finish with subtle highlights around the eyes and mouth to give it a traditional hand carved antique look.
A little history on this mask
It is my understanding that this type of mask would have been worn by a dancer at Shinto shrines during festivals. The wearer who would dance around, interact with the crowd, and pass out rice cakes.

History of the Saru Mask
In the Japanese culture the monkey has a rich and at times confusing role in folklore appearing as both gods and comedic characters.
Having connections to Chinese Shinto beliefs the Monkey was also associated with deities during the Edo Period in Japan. These mask would be worn at festivals or to preform rituals. However, the most common appearances of these mask were in short comedic theatrical plays know as Kyogen wherein they were used in satirical pieces as a comedic character making light of themselves.
As gods that can be very tricky to understand however, one universal trait in any culture is the ability to be mischievous (a bit of a trickster) and even arrogant at times. Monkeys are considered to be very spiritual creatures having all of the tools needed to achieve their goals and dreams yet heaving the tendency to become distracted.
There are many monkeys who live in the mountains of Japan who are often thought of as earthly messengers of the gods. Because of the interesting mix of the human ego and divine devotion monkeys are considered the perfect metaphor for mankind for which they are so similar to.

This is a Japanese Tengu So-men (Full Face Mask) mask. I handcraft and finish each of these mask myself which makes each mask unique with subtle differences as they are not production pieces. I try never to finish one of my masks the same way twice. I made this one based on historical references pictures. It has holes across the top where a leather cap would have been sewn to it for support as well as holes at the bottom where the neck plates would have been. I have seen many historical pictures of these pieces still being intact. Under natural light it is much darker than the pictures. This mask is for decoration but could be worn however, the helmet ties on the side of the mask are fragile. It has a braided red cord for hanging. It measures approximately 9" from chin to the top of the head and is 8.5" wide from ear to ear. The mask is new and in good condition however, it was made to look old. The mask in the picture is the actual mask that you will receive. Making these masks is a hobby of mine and I try to make each one unique.
History of the Somen
Worn during both the Sengoku and Edo period by the samurai this mask would be made from a sheet of russet iron that covered the entire face which was hammered into the final shape. Often times the nose, upper and lower lip portions would be made separate and riveted to the face. Many including the half mask version would also include a throat guard.
A more commonly know mask was the mempo (half mask) which only covered the lower part of the face and nose. Of these many would also have a detachable nose piece giving protection only the cheeks.

This is a Japanese Hannya (Oni-Demon) skull. I handcraft and finish each of these pieces myself which makes each mask unique with subtle differences as they are not production pieces. I try never to finish any of my artwork the same way twice. This one is my interpretation of what a Hannya skull might look like. This mask is for decoration only and could not be worn. It has a braided red cord for hanging. It measures approximately 10." from chin to tip of the horns and is 6" wide. The mask is new and in good condition however, it was made to look old. The mask in the picture is the actual mask that you will receive. Making these masks is a hobby of mine and I try to make each one unique. I also make this particular mask in different colors (red, metallic, white, painted wood or custom colors) as well. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments or maybe you have a specific color you want.
History Of The Hannya Mask
Probably the most popular and well know Japanese Noh masks is the "hannya". It is that of a vengeful and jealous woman turned demon. With its pointed horns, bulging eyes and sharp fangs, it expresses the full wrath, anger and resentment of her nature.
Today these masks a very common in Japan and people believe the image of the demon placed in their home will actually drive evil spirits away. I have a very beautiful antique one hanging in my home that was given to me by my students. In this way it can be seen as a symbol of protection and good luck.
Also, to someone studying martial arts it represents yet something else, the darkness that we all have within ourselves that needs to be harnessed and controlled. So, this would be a great gift for one who studies budo and a meaningful addition to one's dojo as well.

This is a Japanese Ko-Omoto Mask. I handcraft and paint each mask myself which makes each mask unique with subtle differences as they are not production pieces. This mask was inspired from reference pictures very old worn masks of this type. I finished this particular one mat white with her darkened gold teeth, red lips and mysterious eyes. After it was fully painted the white was sanded away to reveal the wood grain underneath. It is for decoration only and cannot be worn. It is made from a wood composite which gives it the look and feel of real wood. It has a red cord running through the back of it for hanging. It measures approximately 8 1/4" from chin to top of head and is 5 3/8" wide. The mask is new and in good condition however it has been purposefully finished to look old and worn. The mask in the picture is the mask you will receive. Making these masks is a hobby of mine and I try to make each one unique. If you would like this mask in a newer finish please let me know.

It has a braided red cord for hanging. It measures approximately 10.5" from chin to tip of the horns and is 7" wide from ear to ear.
Today these mask a very common in Japan and people believe the image of the demon placed in their home will actually drive evil spirits away. I have a very beautiful antique one hanging in my home that was given to me by my students. In this way it can be seen as a symbol of protection and good luck. Also to someone studying martial arts it represents yet something else, the darkness that we all have within ourselves that needs to be harnessed and controlled. So this would be a great gift for one who studies budo and a meaningful addition to one's dojo as well.
