Kamidana Shinto Alter / Shrine
On this page, you will find several Handcrafted versions of traditional style Kamidana. Each is a one of a kind and not a production piece as I have designed and handcrafted each one myself.
The Kamidana (literally translated as god-shelf) is very popular in Japan and can be found in many homes, shrines and martial arts dojos around the world. This small structure is typically placed on a high wall and surrounded with items related to the Shinto religion. It is a way to give a physical form to a place in which one performs their own personal relationship with their religion. However, it does not have to be for Buddhists or those who practice Shintoism. You may use it as a way to enshrine the God you believe in our simply view it as a piece of eastern art.
Inside of the kamidana enshrines an ofuda, these are types of charms, prayers or spiritual beliefs held by the owner. Ofuda come in a variety of forms. Some are simple slips of paper while others are rectangular wooden plagues inscribed with the same. Many are changed yearly.
In the dojo the Kamidana is considered the heart of a traditional dojo. It holds a very special place of honor in the training hall. It is placed there to enshrine the sprite of budo and how it helps us strengthen or minds and body. There to it will be surrounded by artifacts and symbols related to the individual system and it beliefs. This is a hand crafted traditional style Kamidana that I designed myself using a cad program. The scale and design are based on historical references pictures. It was 3D printed using real wood infused PLA filament,(poly lactic acid) then assembled and finished with wood stain and metal detail pieces. I finish each of my pieces in a darker color as I prefer the dark aged look of vintage wooden Kamidana. The Giboshi are also my design and are hand cast in solid pewter. This Kamidana has the look and feel of real wood. It stands 16" tall and is 16" wide. The space inside for the ofuda measures 16"x 8 1/8". The rails can also be removed and set aside to get inside.

This is a scale replica of a Japanese Tori Gate that I designed based on historical references pictures. It was 3D printed using wood infused PLA filament,(poly lactic acid) then assembled and finished with wood stain. Historical wooden Tori were usually left unpainted like the one I created or finished in brilliant red with a black upper motif. It has the look feel of real wood. It stands 12 ½" tall and the top of the gate is 13 1/8" wide.
Traditionally built of wood or stone the Tori gate is commonly found at the entrance of Japanese Shinto Shrines symbolizing the transition from the mundane to a sacred place. The oldest existing Tori gate was constructed during the 12 century and belongs to the Hachiman Shrine located in the Yamagata prefecture of Japan.

It measures 17.5" tall and 19.75" at its widest point. In its construction, I used recycled oak hardwood flooring that was removed from old homes. There is also no plastic on this shrine, as you will find on most production pieces. The giboshi were each turned on a wood lathe and then gold leaf was added.
